Critical time for automobile industry

Economy bites, environment calls

The economic and financial situation remains the biggest challenge for car and commercial vehicle makers in 2010. At the same time, motorized society is going through an important transition towards more sustainable mobility. The automobile industry is at the forefront of that development, bringing low- and zero-emission vehicles to market.

In 2009, demand for passenger cars dropped by 9.5% compared to the pre-crisis levels of 2007. Fleet renewal schemes in 13 EU member states helped support sales in certain passenger car segments, while demand for commercial vehicles dropped more sharply. Economists agree that the worst may well be over, but it is still very difficult to see a real upturn on the horizon. This is especially true for the commercial vehicle manufacturers.

While forecasts remain difficult to make, it is clear that 2010 will again be a very challenging year for the industry, as the overall economy has not recovered yet. The industry nevertheless continues to invest heavily in research and development, in particular in the field of low-emission technologies, underlining its commitment to sustainable mobility.

Auto manufacturers take the environmental challenge very seriously and are moving fast to offer appealing, affordable solutions. Evidence can be found easily and everywhere: on the streets, at the motor shows, in the show rooms, or even on-line.

Yet, zero-emission mobility requires other partners: ensuring the adoption of ecofriendly cars; building an infrastructure for alternative fuels and charging electric vehicles; providing clean and renewable energy sources. EU policy making must, more than ever, seek a comprehensive approach from the outset, marrying economic, environmental and other societal interests in a balanced way, bringing Europe further for its citizens.
