Turning down the heat: International author presents options to cool the planet
12 July 2010
Is it possible to lower the earth’s thermostat? Consider the possibility of using a machine that sucks CO2 from the air, or machines that brighten clouds and deflect sunlight away from the earth – even artificial volcanoes that spray heat-reflecting particles into the atmosphere. These are just some of the diverse schemes that are now being discussed in both the scientific community and the political arena.

Climate Futures invites you to participate in a forum at Macquarie University on Thursday, July 22 to explore the complex issues surrounding geoengineering as a solution to climate change. Join international author Jeff Goodell, and a range of climate scientists to discuss whether geo-engineering is a viable mitigation solution for climate change on any scale, or could it be a ‘cane toad’ solution for Australia?
The forum will begin with Goodell talking about his new book How to cool the planet: Geoengineering and the audacious quest to fix the Earth’s climate. He will discuss the efforts of a small band of motivated geoengineers and scientists who believe manipulating the very substance of our planet through the use of technology provides the way to alleviate the global overheating problem humans have created.
This will be followed by an open discussion between Goodell, climate scientists and the audience about the implications of such schemes and how they fit in with climate adaption strategies.
To participate in this discussion, please email your questions and ideas regarding geoengineering to Leigh Staas by Monday, April 19, 2010.
